How I neglected my health during the first 4 years and what I’m doing to improve it

If you check out my Self Care page, you will see that I have this segment:

Nutritionals and Health Supplements

Starting, building and growing a therapy business is pretty demanding: you’d be juggling multiple hats in the business in the beginning, and that’s on top of your personal lives and responsibilities to family, friends and social stuff.

Also, I practice Essentialism when it comes to supplements and nutrition, and of all the thousands of stuff available out there, these three are the basic building blocks that come from companies that are at least 15 years old, still improving their stuff with R&D and affordable.

Here’s the stuff that I take to keep my health and energy levels tip top:

Xtend Life Bee Pollen

High quality bee pollen supplements has so many benefits linked to it that I don’t know where to start; it’s most known for its property to increase our natural energy levels, and physiologically, it’s because of its nutritional profile: 30 grams of this contains all the vitamins, minerals, enzymes, co-enzymes and co-factors that we need, and it keeps my energy levels going for my 4.30 AM to 9 PM days.

Xtend Life Total Balance Men’s Premium / Xtend Life Total Balance Women’s Premium

Their Premium Total Balance series contains 99 active ingredients that serves to ensure my system and organs are well nourished so that it functions well, and that my body gets all the nutrients it needs for the daily demands I have.

Xtend Life is one of the health supplement companies that I truly respect, because of their dedication to quality and purity. They’re cGMP-compliant (meaning standards meeting US FDA requirements), and have processes that are approved by British Pharmacopeia, and every single batch of products they create have separate testings and Certificate Of Analysis (COA) to ensure purity. They’ve been around since 1998, and I’ve been taking their stuff since 2014.

Aquasana AQ 4000 Counter Top Water Filter

Our bodies is close to 60-70% water, and we know drinking polluted water will make us ill, so the flipside is drinking filtered water that strains out contaminants and leaving the vital minerals and nutrients behind for us to take in via drinking, cooking and showering (it’s good for clients and pets too).

The story behind why I’m so big on high quality essential water and supplements

So I started my therapy business journey in 2008, and during the first 2 years, I was heavily focused on providing onsite therapy support (ie providing therapy manpower to nursing homes, hospitals etc), and I spent a lot of my times traveling, seeing clients. In 2009/2010, I started moving into providing home therapy and onsite therapy support, before gradually going into clinic therapy in 2010.

During my onsite therapy and home therapy time, I spend a minimum of 8 hours a day providing therapy, and if you include travel time, meals, admin etc – I worked an average of 10 – 14 hours per day, everyday. Including Sundays and public holidays.

It was worse when we started our clinic, we worked even harder to get things off the ground, and we worked 12 – 16 hours every day.

Of course:

  1. rest/sleep was limited to 6 hours+ a day
  2. we threw exercise out the window
  3. we had little money (we started the business with $65 and reinvested every dollar back into the business), so we ate not-so-healthy foods such as instant noodles, frozen meats and stuff like that
  4. zero supplements and drank tap water

I still cringe looking at this list.

But that’s how we hustled and started, and I am grateful for the opportunity to hustle. If I had to do it again, I would modify just items 2-4.

  • I can easily add 30 minutes of exercise to my routine. If not, I can climb more stairs instead of a dedicated exercise time. Or a couple of push ups, sit ups etc.
  • I will cut back on eating bad stuff that are either highly processed, pure carbs.
  • I will take my supplements and drink filtered water.

These three do not cost much, in hindsight. But I learned going through it, and why I made all the changes was because it was so challenging building and growing clinics, I was highly stressed.

A particular Chief Finance Officer, let’s put her initials as MC, was, for the lack of better word, a very thoroughly annoying person, who:

  • didn’t add value to my business
  • sought to take more in terms of rent and revenue share
  • paid out amounts owing to us after 3-4 months
  • annoying personality

Oh how I hated her.

After one day of meeting with her and listening to her snotty and shitty remarks, I was so miffed that I went back to my therapy clinic and I felt my head spinning and I remember that I was starting to black out. Luckily, running a therapy clinic meant that we had therapy plinths and I rested there for about 30 minutes.

It was the first time that had happened to me.

And it was that time that I knew that I had to be healthy to be at the top of my therapy business (or any other businesses, investments, relationships and life as a whole). I had gained a whopping 20+ kg during those 2-3 years, eating crap food, and it’s time to change.

I joined a gym membership, and penned into my calendar my scheduled workout days, and keep to the schedule, and exercised at least 2-4 times every week, lasting 45 minutes to 55 minutes each time.

I started taking supplements since then, experimenting with different brands to try and see which worked well for my body until I settled in on Xtend Life.

Only later in October 2016 I started looking at filtered water to drink, not only for myself but for my entire family.

Today I:

  • exercise almost every day (ever since my gym shut down) with a 20-25 minute jog around my estate and then following up with sit ups, push ups, planks (side, front), squats, bridging etc
  • take my essential supplements
  • drink filtered water
  • pray and meditate every morning
  • speak to my team on problems to resolve

I am happier, healthier and stronger than ever.
